Rest in Productivity

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

John Piper made this statement one time and I think about it often. As he was rehearsing a rather busy schedule upon being asked at TG4G, he says, "I find rest in productivity." I often find myself busy, but unfortunately, I don't find the desired productivity. My little mind is too easily distracted by things that aren't really important. As I'm busy, yet distracted, my productivity is diminished and therefore, I don't really find 'rest' in my work.

God has placed us on the earth to work. It seems too many times I just want to finish my work so I can get to something entertaining or fun. That's not why I'm on the planet. God placed Adam in the garden to work. This work is obviously complicated by the effects of the fall but work existed before sin. I tend to think of work as an inherently bad thing - something that prohibits me from doing something inherently good (fun).

May Colossians 3.23 guide our work days today: "whatever you do, do your work heartily as unto the Lord."

I find pleasure and amazement in God's gracious act of making provision for me and my family by the work He constantly provides.

Truthfully the monetary benefits are often the motivator in getting up each day and putting forth the efforts that I make. The reality of it all is that I am totally undeserving of that day, the next meal and especially the work He provides in order for me to support myself and my family through such means.

I am even more reluctant to be involved in work that may benefit myself and my family, whether it is a simple fix around the house or performing an oil change on my vehicles (STEWARDSHIP), which I know results in sin!!

The following verse should always be and ONLY be my motivator
1 Corinthians 10:31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

It's sad that God's glory is often the last thing I think about before taking on such tasks.
